Our friend, Gladis, was nice enough to take us out on the Argonaut – one of the boats from Morgan’s Rock Eco-Lodge.  We motored north up the coast past Maderas, Majagual, and eventually dropped anchor near Playa Blanca and jumped off the boat for a swim.  Our Captain, David, and his assistant, Tito, were great at helping everyone learn how to fish.  In total, the group pulled out about 4 urels and a black tuna.

Surf Sanctuary

The Surf Sanctuary in Las Salinas

We just got back from an awesome weekend.  Our friend, Baldo, is the President of the Nicaraguan National Surf Circuit, so we decided to head up Popoyo to watch the last of four surf competitions.  Popoyo is a small village north west of San Juan del Sur, made popular by the surfing community for its good surfbreaks.

With the exception of a few raindrops, we had beautiful weather.  My favorite part of the whole weekend was our stay at The Surf Sanctuary, a beautiful community of casitas located in Las Salinas.  The Surf Sanctuary offers tour packages, meals, etc., but we mostly just enjoyed the beauty of our surroundings from the colorful flowers to the owners’ friendly dog.  If you are thinking about a trip up that way, I highly recommend checking this place out (and I’m not getting paid to plug them)!

4 Months Here and Loving It!

So, my husband, dog, and I have been living here for over 4 months now and we are loving it! The rainy season has just begun and everything has turned green and lush. With the exception of a few days of straight downpours, we’ve had incredible weather. Usually, it rains for a few hours – either early in the morning or late in the evening, but the days are often full of sun.

One of my favorite places to visit is Playa Majagual. The beach is beautiful and the sunsets, over the rock outcroppings, can’t be beat.

Ometepe and my Parents’ Visit

My folks were just here for a 10-day visit.  During their trip, we took a day-trip to Ometepe.  One day just doesn’t do that place justice.  You really need more time to explore the island of two volcanoes, to hike, to stay in one of the awesome hotels, etc.  Even with just an afternoon, we saw a ton, including petroglyphs in Altagracia, Charco Verde Nature Reserve, and my personal favorite – Ojo de Agua – a natural spring with a rope swing.

When we returned from Ometepe, my parents were so taken by San Juan, the culture and the warmth of the people here, that they actually bought a home here!  It’s not done yet, but you can check out a photo of the mock-up.

Horseback Riding in the South

Jus and I went horseback riding through a friend’s finca this weekend.  My horse was great, but Justin was a little too large for his horse – I think it might have actually been a donkey.  His feet pretty much dragged the entire ride and I am almost certain that I heard the horse give a sigh of relief when Justin eventually dismounted.  Nevertheless, we had a great time riding.  It was a gorgeous day as we meandered through riverbeds and checked out mango, banana, papaya, and orange trees.  We were treated to an awesome lunch of chicken, rice and homemade tortillas afterwards.  Pretty much a great day, all around…

Patriots 19-0! Super Bowl Champs…in San Gregorio, Nicaragua

The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl and ended the season with a perfect 19-0 record — at least it looks that way in Nicaragua.  The NFL donated 290 Patriots hats and an equal number of team jerseys trumpeting the slogans “Super Bowl Champions, 19-0” to impoverished children from two small communities in southern Nicaragua.  During a recent drive back from Managua, Justin and Zach scouted out the location of the hats and tee, drove thru San Gregorio, and quickly enlisted some local agents (shown in pics) to help them buy a few hats and t-shirts in an attempt to rewite history.  All benefited as the guys came away with a little piece of history, while making a small donation to the community of San Gregorio.
